Did you know that obesity has become a worldwide epidemic?
In 2016, the World Health Organisation (WHO) revealed that 39% of the world adult population age 18 years and above were overweight and 13% were obese. The prevalence of overweight and obese individuals has risen dramatically from the 90s to the 2000s. So we ask what causes obesity? Well it is mainly due to an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended. Globally, there has been an increased combination of physical inactivity and intake of energy-dense foods that are high in sugar and fat causing obesity. Raised BMI levels, overweight and obesity are well known major risk factors for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, but did you know that obesity also is related with cancer? In ´Movember´ prostate cancer awareness month we remember that men who are overweight or obese are at greater risk of developing an aggressive form of prostate cancer. You can make healthy lifestyle choices, improve lifespan and well-being. As researchers, we do our part investigating the relationship between obesity and prostate cancer, and contributing to better diagnosis and treatment approaches!
